The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is a comprehensive investigation focusing on subclinical cardiovascular conditions and identifying the factors that forecast the advancement to clinically overt cardiovascular diseases. MESA researchers analyze a varied, community-based group of 6,814 asymptomatic individuals, aged 45-84, from six research centers spread across the United States. The participant breakdown consists of approximately 38% white, 28% African-American, 22% Hispanic, and 12% Asian, primarily Chinese descendants. Commencing in July 2000 and concluding in January 2012, the project spanned a series of examinations. Periodic assessments, carried out every 9 to 12 months, track clinical morbidity and mortality. The final phase involves data analysis and publication.
An eminent contribution of MESA is the introduction of the MESA CHD Risk Score, uniquely encompassing coronary artery calcium scores. This influential risk assessment tool aids in tailoring preventive interventions ranging from dietary adjustments to medication strategies against health issues like high blood pressure and cholesterol.
The guidance provided by this resource emphasizes an informative role while underscoring the significance of personalized treatment decisions derived from a collaborative dialogue between patients and healthcare providers.
The development of this application was overseen by Ted W. James, MD, under the auspices of the MESA Executive Committee.
